In this article, we will outline the drink’s history, how to spice up your Taco Tuesday with a twist on the classic margarita, and how to get the best tequila delivered straight to your door.

What is a margarita?

One of Mexico’s most beloved exports is the margarita. A margarita, in its most basic form, is a salted-rimmed cocktail consisting of tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau or Triple Sec. Aficionados of this cocktail deem the drink the perfect combination of sweet, sour, and salty.

Who invented the margarita?

People often dispute the origin story of the margarita. A widely accepted tale, however, is that a man by the name of Carlos “Danny” Herrera concocted the popular drink in 1938 at his Tijuana restaurant, Rancho La Gloria. According to Herrera, the margarita came to be when showgirl Margorie King, who was allergic to all liquor besides tequila, requested a tequila cocktail. Inspired by the ingredients in a tequila shot: salt, lime, and tequila, Herrera went to work crafting his now famous drink. When it came time to name his concoction, the mixologist landed on Margarita, Spanish for Marjorie.

Herrera, however, is not the only person to make claim to the margarita invention. In fact, Margarita Sames, a prominent Dallas socialite, maintains she invented the refreshing drink in 1948. Sames asserts she crafted the cocktail while entertaining her friends by mixing her two favorite spirits, Cointreau and tequila, along with lime juice. Then, her hotelier friend, Nick Hilton, impressed by Sames concoction, began serving the drink under the name Margarita in his hotels.

Interestingly, the list of margarita inventors does not stop there. While both Herrera and Sames were confident that they crafted the premier margarita, Eric Felten’s 1937’s Cafe Royal Cocktail Book may debunk these claims. Although the cocktail delineated in this book takes on a different name, the Picador, the recipe remains the same: tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice.

How should a margarita be served?

This drink should be served in a margarita glass, which is a stepped-diameter variant of a cocktail glass or champagne coupe. Typically, bartenders will salt the rim of the glass to balance out the sweetness of the orange liquor (Triple Sec or Cointreau), acidity of the lime juice, and warmth of the tequila. Often, the cocktail is served on the rocks (poured over ice). Sometimes, however, individuals opt for a frozen margarita which is extra refreshing on a hot day! Finally, this cocktail is typically garnished with a lime wedge to add an extra element of tartness.

How do you make margaritas from scratch?

To make a classic margarita from scratch, you will need four ingredients. First, we will share self-proclaimed margarita inventor Margarita Sames’s original recipe. Sames’s ingredients include 2 ounces of white tequila, 1 ounce Cointreau, and 1 ounce lime juice. After rimming the glass with salt, shake the three remaining ingredients over ice, serve over ice cubes, and garnish with a lime wedge.
