Although today, gin is a bar cart staple, this has not always been the case. This spirit’s popularity grew substantially in the early 2000s. In fact, it grew so much so that today many consider gin to be as versatile as vodka. Bartenders and gin-lovers alike praise this spirit for its unique flavors. Gin is sure to elevate any cocktail. Below, we give a brief overview of gin and how it is best enjoyed. At the end, we present Minibar Delivery’s favorite cocktails with gin. So what are you waiting for? Keep reading and be well on your way to becoming a gin expert.

What is gin and how is it made?

Gin is a grain-based spirit coveted for its principal juniper flavor. Typically, distillers liken this spirit to vodka. For example, both gin and vodka are distilled grains that produce ethanol. The main difference, however, is gin undergoes a second distillation process. During the secondary distillation, the distillers pass the spirit through a variety of herbs and spices. The result of this secondary process is spirit with the distinctive flavor and aroma of pine.

What is the best way to drink gin?

While most people do not drink gin straight, it is a totally acceptable way to enjoy this spirit. In fact, gin experts might tell you this is the BEST way to enjoy this juniper flavored spirit. If you opt to enjoy your gin neat, make sure it is top of the line. Lower end gins are better suited for cocktails rather than enjoyed on their own. We recommend Tanqueray, a sweet, floral-flavored gin, that can certainly stand on its own. Make sure to sip the gin slowly so you can appreciate all its flavors.

  1. Have it up

You might be asking yourself …

“What does it mean to have a drink up?”

When you order a drink up, you are ordering a drink chilled, but served without ice. If you want to enjoy your gin “up”, simply pour a shot of gin into a martini shaker filled with ice and shake. Next, strain the cooled gin into cocktail glass. Make sure to enjoy slowly in order to pick up on gin’s unique flavors.

  1. On the rocks

Trying gin on the rocks is another way to enjoy the complex flavor of gin. If you are unfamiliar with the term “on the rocks”, it means served over ice. Simply place a few ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass and pour in a shot on gin.

Swirl the gin and ice cubes around in a glass a few times to help chill the gin before taking your first sip.

  1. Add soda water

This is a great option for those who are not yet ready to indulge in a gin neat, yet still want to enjoy the complex flavor profiles of gin. Soda water adds extra flavor profiles while making the drink less potent. Perhaps, try citrus-infused soda water. Lemon, lime, grapefruit, and blood orange tend to compliment the juniper flavor of gin.

  1. In a cocktail

This is perhaps the most popular option of all. Gin is a star in many beloved cocktails. Try adding ginger ale. Gin and ginger are a match made in heaven. Or, opt to add herbs to enhance already herbaceous gins. Below, we have highlighted some of our favorite cocktails with gin. Keep reading to check them out!
