Tequila is no stranger to the cocktail scene. Often, cocktails with tequila score high in cocktail-lovers’ minds. Although less versatile than vodka, tequila stars in many different cocktail concoctions. While you might love tequila because of margaritas, there are many other popular mixed drinks made with this spirit. We here at Minibar Delivery LOVE tequila and we are excited to share our knowledge with you!

You might be wondering…

What differentiates tequila from other spirits?

In this article, I will discuss tequila, its history, and how mixologists use tequila in mixed drinks.

What is tequila, anyways?

Tequila, by definition, is a distilled beverage made from the blue agave plant. A blue agave plant, which is native to Mexico, is succulent related to the lily family.  The color of tequila can range from clear, which means it is unaged (blanco), to light gold, which means its rested (reposado), to vibrant gold, which means its aged (añejo). The ABVs of tequila range from 35%-40%.

Did you know…

That legally, there are only 5 Mexican states that can produce Tequila: Jalisco, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, and Nayarit. In fact, 99% of tequila is crafted in Jalisco, home to the town of Tequila (where the spirit got its name!)

Interestingly, tequila’s history dates back to the Aztecs (250-300 AD). The Aztecs created pulque, a slightly sour tasting alcohol made from the extraction and fermentation of blue agave’s sweet sap.

Fun Fact:

Aztecs highly revered pulque, utilizing it mainly in religious ceremonies and sacred rituals.

What is the best way to drink tequila?

1. Neat

In Mexico, the most traditional way to drink Tequila is neat at room temperature. Many experts compare the drinking experience to that of sipping and savoring a good scotch. Sipping the beverage neat will allow you to pick up on the spirit’s flavors ranging from zingy citrus to zesty pepper. If you choose to enjoy tequila neat, make sure the tequila is 100% agave.

2. With a Hint of Water

You might be asking yourself …

“Your saying I should water down my tequila?!”

Well, no, not exactly. Tequilas that are quite strong (think 80 proof and higher), could benefit from a few drops of water. Adding water to this spirit could help expand its flavors.

3. In a cocktail

The tequila distillation process is quite complex. The region the tequila is sourced and its method of production can alter the taste of the spirit quite dramatically. Additionally, when considering how to best compliment a tequila in a mixed drink, one should consider the spirit’s age. Blanco, joven, reposado, añejo, and extra añejo tequilas have completely different flavor profiles. Some are better sipped neat, while others compliment cocktail ingredients quite well.
